Why do you want to prune?

Before you start tree pruning and shaping the tree, you need to be clear with the reasons you want to prune the tree. Do you find damaged branches? or you want to shape the tree? If you have a proper answer, then you can proceed further with a clear vision in mind and focus on your task. The proper technique of pruning cut is close to the chief trunk, Lateral bud, or branch but not too dense. You need to get into the top close to the branch bark ridge. The branch collar at the bottom but not injured either. The collar is essential, as this part possess hormones, which support wound healing. If you want to go through light tree pruning such as removal of dead and damaged leaves or dead wood, you can proceed anytime. However, with bigger goals, you would need to plan a bit before you step into the process.

If you want to prune the trees at your garden in winter, it would lead to an explosion of growth during the season spring. If you want your trees to have slower growth, then summer is the right season to prune. So, choosing summer is a great idea if you are trying to shape your tree having slower growth.

Use the 1/3 and ¼ rules of pruning:

  • You are advised not to remove more than ¼ of the crown of a tree in a single season.
  • Maintain the main side branches at least 1/3 smaller than the diameter of the trunk of a tree.
  • Most of the broadleaf trees do not need pruning from the bottom any more than 1/3 of the total height of the tree.
  • If possible, indulge the side branches, which shape angles that are 1/3 of the vertical that form 2 o’ clock or 10 o’ clock angle in respect of the trunk.

Assess the tree:

Proper tree pruning methods require time. Look at the tree you are about to prune and make an assessment by yourself. Observe the size and shape of the tree and imagine how the tree should look after the pruning is done. Without any apt planning or idea, you would not be able to get a satisfactory result even after your best efforts.

Cut properly:

When you are shortening a branch make the cut at a lateral bud. Consider a bud that would create a bud, which will continue to grow in your desired direction (commonly outwards). Make sure that the cut is clean and sharp, having a slight angle about a ¼ inch beyond the bud.

Remove the damaged branches:

This is the key part of tree pruning. First, identify the branches that are damaged. In addition, remove them one by one carefully. Damaged branches often harm the other branches. Broken branches need to be pruned so that nutrients and water they are still consuming from the tree get distributed among the other branches.
